Ideas on How to Propose (GUEST POST)

You’ve made the decision and now comes the hard part: proposing. Romance movies have set the bar extremely high. Proposals need to be romantic and relevant to the couple. They should become a story that will be told to friends, family, and future generations. But with all this pressure, how do you do it right? Here are some ideas on how to propose.

1. Location, Location, Location
You want your proposal to have meaning, so why not take it back to where it all began? Surprise her by going to where you first met or had your first date. Make it look like it did back then or dress it up with candles and music.

2. Timing
There are two reasons why holidays are a great time to propose. One, they can turn an already special occasion into something bigger and better. You may be able to surprise her by already having a reason to get dressed-up and go somewhere. Maybe your friends and family are present. Two, you will never forget the date. As you get older, there are a lot of dates that hold some sort of importance. By choosing a well-known date/day, you have a better chance of always remembering and marking it every year. She will appreciate the thought.

3. Make it a Game
If you and your soon-to-be-fiancee have a funny side and are perhaps not overly sappy, turn your proposal into a game. There are plenty of ways to do this.
Board Game - Play a board game, but covertly include one or more cards that will make up your proposal.
Scavenger Hunt - This one will take a lot more time and planning, but can make sure it’s a fantastic memory. Plant clues for her to find and follow, all leading to the big moment.
Jigsaw Puzzle - Everyone loves a jigsaw puzzle. Have her piece it together to reveal your message.

4. Spell it Out
Make a visual display. Spell it out in rocks on the beach and take her for a walk. Write it in chalk on a pavement. Organise roses on a bedspread to say those special words.

The Words
A lot of time can be spent trying to get the wording right, but these are not your vows. If you have taken her by surprise, she may not even remember your exact words here. Speak honestly and simply. Sometimes less is best.

5. The Ring
Once you’ve found the right words and way to say them, you want the perfect ring. This will come down to how well you know your future-spouse. Are they flashy and fancy? Do they like simple and elegant? Consider custom engagement rings to make it even more memorable and unique.

Whichever way you decide to do it, make it special to you personally as a couple. Consider filming it or finding a way to capture the moment. Focus on the two of you and let it be the start to a beautiful journey.
